Pastor of Saint Paul the Apostle Parish, Brookville Named Monsignor by Pope Benedict XVI Print E-mail

Reverend Monsignor ClerkinROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. – May 23, 2012 – The Most Reverend William Murphy, bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Rockville Centre, has announced that Pope Benedict XVI has conferred the title of “Monsignor” at the level of Chaplain to His Holiness upon Father Robert J. Clerkin. Reverend Monsignor Clerkin is currently serving as pastor, Saint Paul the Apostle parish, Brookville.

The honorary title of “Monsignor” is given to Roman Catholic priests as a sign of appreciation and recognition of the service they have rendered, both locally and in the world.

After he was ordained in 1980, Rev. Msgr. Clerkin was assigned to Saint Hugh of Lincoln parish, Huntington Station and then associate pastor of Holy Name of Mary parish, Valley Stream. He then served as chaplain at Saint Agnes Cathedral High School. Rev. Msgr. Clerkin also served as associate pastor at Saint Agnes Cathedral parish, Rockville Centre and Saint Joseph parish, Garden City. In 1997, he was appointed pastor of Saint Francis de Sales parish, Patchogue and then in was named pastor of Saint Paul the Apostle parish, Brookville.

In addition to Rev. Msgr. Clerkin, Pope Benedict XVI also conferred the title of “Monsignor” upon the following priests in the Diocese of Rockville Centre: Rev. Thomas Costa, pastor of Our Lady of Mercy parish, Hicksville; Rev. Joseph Mirro, pastor of Immaculate Conception parish, Westhampton Beach; Rev. Gerald Ringenback, pastor, Saint Bernard parish, Levittown; and Rev. Mark Rowan, chaplain, Colonel, U.S. Air Force.

About The Diocese of Rockville Centre

The Diocese of Rockville Centre was formed in 1957 and covers 1,198 square miles in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. The diocese serves approximately 1,737,498 baptized Catholics (total population in both counties is approximately 3.4 million). There are 134 parishes (1 campus parish) in 115 towns. In 2010, 16,318 baptisms, 16,296 confirmations, 17,123 First Holy Communions and 4,773 marriages took place in the diocese. There are 18,496 students in Catholic elementary schools; 12,328 students in Catholic high schools and 3,500 students in higher institutions. There are 53 Catholic elementary schools (49 parish or regional and 4 private), 10 high schools (3 diocesan, 2 parish and 5 private) and one Catholic college in the diocese. Catholic Health Services of Long Island consists of six hospitals, three nursing homes, a community-based home for those with special needs and a hospice.
