Mass of the Lord's Supper Homily 2012 |

Text of Bishop William Murphy's Mass of the Last Supper Homily 2012
Simon Montefiore in his new book, Jerusalem – A History, gives a vivid picture of that city during Passover in the time of Jesus. Crowds milling about, sheep being led to slaughter, visitors and pilgrims from everywhere, a whole potpourri of sounds and smells and activity. In the midst of that cacophony, Jesus has been going up to the Temple to pray and to teach. The crowds are fascinated and the people are divided. The leaders are concerned and the tensions are heightened. Who is he? Will he come to the Temple? Is he the one to free us from the Romans? Did he really raise Lazarus from the dead?
Listen to John, Jesus knew that his hour had come to pass from this world to the Father. He loved his own in the world and he loved them to the end: usque ad finem; eis telos”. What does that mean? How will he show this “love to the end”? Tonight, you and I enter the upper room with the first disciples, those first best friends of Jesus. Tonight, surrounded by the whole drama of Jewish tradition and Jewish ritual, Jesus loves his own to the end. As they gather at table to share this last supper, he opens his heart to them. He tells him of the Father’s love for him and for them. He invites them to dwell in Him, to know the joy that comes from union with Him. He tells them he will die but this is for them even though they do not understand why. He prays for unity and then he does the unexpected. He gets up and washes their feet.

Text of Bishop William Murphy's Holy Thursday Chrism Mass Homily 2012
GRACE TO YOU AND PEACE FROM JESUS CHRIST WHO IS THE FAITHFUL WITNESS, THE FIRSTBORN OF THE DEAD AND THE RULER OF THE KINGS OF THE EARTH.
John’s haunting vision of the Kingdom of God is one where we belong, where we all are fully participants for, as John tells us, HE HAS MADE US INTO A KINGDOM, PRIESTS FOR HIS GOD AND FATHER. The gift of faith and life in baptism has consecrated us all. Through the sacraments of initiation you and I who were “no people” have become the true People of God. At our baptism, and again later at confirmation, we were anointed with the chrism of salvation. The water that flowed over us has dried but it has made a lasting effect. The oil that gleamed on our foreheads may not be still visible but it left the chrismed sign of the cross etched in our hearts, the eternal sign of our unity: HAIL O CROSS OUR ONLY HOPE! The oil we bless today will be distributed to every parish throughout this Church. All three oils, but especially Holy Chrism, fulfill the role of instruments to bring the Spirit of God into our hearts and make us the Body of Christ. This great gift is ours to live but even more ours to proclaim and witness for all humankind. There is no limit to our love and commitment to all of humanity. We are God’s firstborn and ours is the call to witness his life and be ourselves instruments of salvation.

Pascua de Resurrección 2012 |
|

Easter 2012 |

Dearly Beloved Brothers and Sisters in Christ:
“Why seek One Who is living among the dead. He is risen as He said.” The words of the angel ring out again this year of 2012 as they have every year we call Anno Domini The Year of Our Lord. For the world we live in was re-born and transformed on that first Easter when Jesus, the Son of God made man Who had died humanly, died that Good Friday on the cross, rose three days later to the glory that only God could give and did give. This glory He calls us to share. We look no longer among the dead things of the past to find the meaning of life. We look to Jesus Who became one with us by His Incarnation, born of the Virgin Mary. He took on our human condition, a human condition that led Him to the cross. But, Son that He was, He overcame human death and rose to call us to share His life, the divine life of Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Lent 2012 |
|

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ:

The season of Lent is an extraordinary moment of grace the Church is called to live every year in preparation for the Sacred Triduum. These Lenten weeks of prayer and fasting and works of charity are all pointed to the solemn holy days of the Thursday Mass of the Lord’s Supper, the Friday of His Passion and Death on the Cross and then the exultant moments of proclaiming His Resurrection at the Easter Vigil and Easter Day.
What we will celebrate on those days shapes and informs what we seek to become by conversion, prayer and penance in the Lenten season. At the heart of the Cross of Jesus Christ is forgiveness and reconciliation. In fact the message of the Cross is the message that love, God’s love for us, the Son’s love in human form, that love is poured forth as the greatest act of forgiveness the world can ever know. God forgives us through His Son’s death, a death that brings about the reconciliation of all humankind to God. Praised be Jesus Christ! Hail, O Cross, our only hope! |
