Molloy College Presents “Catholics, Capitalism and Climate”

February 17 Discussion To Feature Cardinal Peter Turkson, Primary Contributor to the Recent Papal Encyclical on the Environment

Rockville Centre, NY – Molloy College announced today that Cardinal Peter Turkson, the President of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace as well as the primary contributor to the recent papal encyclical on the environment, will be the keynote speaker at a February 17 event entitled, “Catholics, Capitalism and Climate.”

The presentation will begin at 2 p.m. at the Madison Theatre on the Molloy campus, and will be followed by a panel discussion that will be hosted by Father James Martin, Editor-at-large of America magazine.

“As part of its mission, Molloy strives to hold important discussions on issues of faith and society,” said Dr. Drew Bogner, President of Molloy. “Given the Holy Father’s recent encyclical, Laudato Si’ (Praise Be to You: On Care for Our Common Home), we felt that this was an important topic worthy of further exploration.”

The presentation is part of Molloy’s Joseph and Peggy Maher Leadership Forum, an annual speakers series. Past speakers at the Maher Forum have included: former Secretary of States James Baker and Colin Powell, former Ireland Prime Minister Bertie Ahern, and New York Times business reporter Andrew Sorkin.

Molloy College, an independent Catholic college based in Rockville Centre, was founded in 1955 by the Sisters of Saint Dominic in Amityville, NY. The College serves a student population of approximately 4,600 undergraduate and graduate students. Molloy students can earn degrees in a variety of outstanding academic programs, including nursing, business, education, social work, music therapy and many more.
