SCOPE OF POSITION
The mission of Catholic education is the holistic spiritual, intellectual, and emotional formation in intimacy with the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit and in zealous dedication to the mission of the Catholic Church.  The Catholic school principal, under the leadership of the Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Rockville Centre, is a champion of the school’s Catholic identity, vibrant Catholic formation, and commitment to the Splendor of Truth of Catholic teaching in the New Evangelization.

The principal is committed to academic and educational practice, excellence, and the highest standards of servant leadership in regard to enrollment and retention of students, governance, finance, marketing, development, family evangelization, alumni evangelization, and use of social media.

RESPONSIBILITIE

Philosophy:
• A practicing Catholic who understands and is dedicated to the ministry of Catholic education.
• Actively fosters the Catholic identity of the school by promoting Catholic truths and values of our Catholic faith and nurturing the faith formation and spirituality of faculty, staff and students.

Organizational Leadership:
• Establishes an organizational structure through which working relationships, lines of accountability and responsibility, and communication channels are clearly defined.
• Implements and encourages collaborative planning and leadership at all levels of the school organization.
• Contributes to the building of positive morale among faculty, staff, and students.
• Models integrity and promotes high ethical and professional standards in all interactions with the stakeholders in the school.
• Establishes a clear, strong, and consistent policy for dealing with issues involving student discipline and interactions among teachers, administration, and the parent body.
• Assures maintenance of complete, accurate, and up-to-date personnel and pupil records according to Diocesan guidelines.

Faculty, Staff, and Instructional Program:
• Establishes clear policies and practices for recruitment and hiring of faculty and staff as well as for professional accountability.
• Possesses a broad understanding of curriculum, instruction, and student assessment procedures.
• Guides the development and implementation of the school curriculum.
• Provides orientation for new faculty.
• Encourages and enables faculty and staff to pursue professional development opportunities.
• Encourages effective teaching based on current educational research and improved student learning results.
• Approves the school calendar and scheduling of special events.
• Possesses a comprehensive understanding of the role of technology in education.

Students:
• Oversees the recruitment and admission process for new students.
• Administers disciplinary and dismissal actions.
• Monitors student progress in the academic program as well as in co-curricular and extracurricular activities.
• Maintains a visible presence during the school day and at school-related liturgies, events, and activities.

Parents:
• Establishes accessible and open communication with parents (individual meetings, emails, parent programs, conferences)
• Participates frequently in school-sponsored parent activities.
• Encourages parent involvement.

Finance and Facilities:
• Works closely with the Business Manager and School Board to ensure that the school is adequately funded for school operations, including: salaries and benefits, student tuition assistance, ongoing and deferred maintenance, and staff professional development.
• Complies with all procedures set forth for Catholic high schools in the Administrative Handbook.
• Participates in the activities of the Development Office.
• Ensures the school is safe, clean, well-maintained, and attractive.

Public Relations and External Constituencies:
• Actively promotes the image and reputation of the school.
• Promotes social justice and outreach programs to Catholic and other non-profit agencies.
• Fosters cooperation and communication with Catholic schools, parishes, and the community.

TRAITS AND CHARACTERISTICS
The principal will be a practicing Catholic whose faith is visible and inspiring in daily life and work. He or she will be a collaborative leader with an accessible and approachable style that demonstrates a willingness to listen to new ideas while offering creative solutions and strong leadership to challenges. It is critical to remember that employment relationships with any organization of the Roman Catholic Church on Long Island are, first and foremost, subject at all times to the moral and religious precepts of the Roman Catholic Church as interpreted and applied by the Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Rockville Centre (the “Diocesan Bishop”). The Diocesan Bishop is the final arbiter of the application of such precepts to all aspects of employment relationships, from hiring to termination. The successful candidate will be a coalition builder who creates an inclusive environment that is conducive to sincere and open communication. 

The principal must also demonstrate the following:  

• Excellent oral and written communication skills, including public speaking skills.  
• Knowledge and understanding of the financial, accounting, marketing, and operational functions of an organization and the ability to apply this knowledge in decision making.  
• Commitment to ongoing professional growth through reading, classes, workshops, conferences, etc.
• Ability to articulate an educational vision that incorporates the best aspects of Catholic education.
• Experience with various leadership strategies when dealing with parents and alumni.

EDUCATION
A master’s degree or higher in Education or Education Administration is required.  NYS School Leadership Certification required.  A minimum of 7-10 years of high school teaching and/or administrative experience is also required.  A significant amount of experience must have occurred in a Catholic school environment.

COMPENSATION
Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience, and a comprehensive benefits package will be provided.
