ROCKVILLE CENTRE - Bishop William Murphy of the Diocese of Rockville Centre praised the decision by an overwhelming majority of bishops attending the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) conference in Denver to conduct an on-site audit for all dioceses this year. Bishop Murphy said “I am very pleased that the commitment we made in Dallas was affirmed overwhelmingly here in Denver. The Diocese of Rockville Centre will continue to fulfill its responsibilities and is always open to improve what we are doing to protect children and minors and support the wonderful priests of our diocese.”
The information gathered in the audit process will be used to compile the second annual report on the implementation of the “Charter for Child and Youth Protection.” The report will assess how successful each diocese is enacting the policies of the charter. The review process will begin shortly
The bishops also directed the National Review Board and the Ad Hoc Committee on Sexual Abuse to start work on a study of the “causes and context” of the recent crisis. Ann Burke, the interim chair of the National Review Board was pleased with that decision saying “The message is clear: Children will be safe from harm in the Catholic Church and the bishops and lay people will work on this together.
