Spiritual warfare is a topic which many people are uncomfortable with these days.  In so much of our culture we are content to see everything as "relative" - even good and evil - and Satan is often thought of as just a cartoon character.  But Scripture couldn't be more clear on the subject:  "For our struggle is not with flesh and blood but with the principalities, with the powers, with the world rulers of this present darkeness, with the evil spirits in the heavens." (Ephesians 6:12)

St. Margaret Mary writes of her own spiritual warfare:  "As I grew up, my crosses increased; for the devil, in order to make me fail against the vow I had made (to a religious life), brought about that I should be presented with several advantageous offers of marriage...my relations pressed me to accept, and my mother, incessently weeping, told me that she looked to me as her only hope of putting an end to her misery..."  She struggled for years to overcome the obstacles that she believed Satan put in her path, and she was finally victorious and entered the convent at Paray.

It is said that the most powerful lie Satan has perpetuated upon the world is that he doesn't exist.  But if you are truly trying to live a life in Christ, you, too, will have battles in the spiritual realm.    The only way to combat these is to "put on the armor of God" (Ephesians 6:13-17), which St. Paul tells us includes the "shield of faith, the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit". Only with our faith in God, salvation from Christ, and the help of the Holy Spirit are we able to confound the snares that Satan sets for us.  Today, put on your armor and step out, unafraid, into Life!

St. Margaret Mary, pray for us!
