“Every time you smile at someone it is an action of love, a gift to that person, a beautiful thing.” BMT

Have you ever had a stranger smile at you on the street?  Did it catch you off guard?  Did you smile back?  One of Mother Teresa’s greatest gifts was her understanding of the value of small things in people’s lives.  We are sometimes stingy with our smiles, reserving them only for our closest friends.  We don’t even always smile at people we pass in the hallway at work or those we see on the train every day.  Somewhere deep inside we are fearful of intimacy or rejection.

Just what is conveyed by a simple smile?  What good does it do?  A smile to a stranger can mean many things:  “Take courage – Have hope – Be well – I understand – Don’t give up – Peace be with you – We’re all in this together – I could be your friend…”  Just a two-second blessing that Mother Teresa knew somehow had an impact on eternity.

Today, Lord, let me be generous with my smile – to my family, to my friends, to those I meet along the way, to those who need a blessing.  Thank you for Mother Teresa’s wisdom; may we learn from her that we all carry this simple but precious gift.  Amen!

Bl. Mother Teresa, pray for us!
