Mother Teresa referred to her mission in the ghettos as "the Work". In a document to Jesuit Father Joseph Neuner she wrote: "I want only God in my life - 'The work' is really and solely His. - He asked - He told me what to - He guided every step - directs every movement I take - puts the words in my mouth - makes me teach the Sisters the way...About the Work I am convinced it is all He."
In spite of her spiritual aridity, she believed and had complete faith that God was behind the Work. She understood that He wanted to show the world, through her, the importance and the dignity of every human being. Perhaps she also remembered St. Paul's letter to the Philippians: "In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy because of your partnership in the Gospel from the first day until now, being confident of this, that He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus." (Philippians 1:4-6)
Mother Teresa did her best to be faithful to her Work, knowing that God would also be faithful to His: to bring her to fruitful completion in Christ. As we end our month with this true Missionary of Charity, may we take to heart her words on how to accomplish our own Work for God:
"Yesterday is gone. Tomorrow has not come.
We have only today. Let us begin..."
Bl. Mother Teresa, please continue to pray for us!
