Padre Pio recommended highly that anyone who takes their Christian faith seriously spend time each morning "preparing for battle" by scripture reading, meditation, and a thorough examination of self.  Who knows what our day may bring?  If we begin with God we can face any onslaught.

There is so much we can gain by greeting the day this way, for example, if we take the opportunity to focus on a line of scripture.  Try choosing a passage from the daily readings or perhaps a psalm and committing it to memory, asking God to unfold its relevance in your life.  As God's word enters our mind and heart it grows and bears fruit in our faith and in our actions.  If we consciously bring up the passage during our day, we will find that it does influence us towards the good:

"I seek you with all my heart;
   do not let me stray from your commands.
I have hidden your word in my heart
   that I might not sin against you.. " (Psalm 119:10-11)

Perhaps we will only make the smallest change at first - being a bit kinder, giving a gentler answer, not letting our temper get the best of us, or giving someone the benefit of the doubt.  But the more time we give to God, the more we will change for the better. And if we think of how much we are bombarded with evil throughout the day - people using foul language, distressing news reports, provocative programs, etc., we can see that we need to bombard ourselves with holiness!  So let us follow Padre Pio's example and prepare for battle this day and every day.  If the Saints are God's army, may we be counted in their number.

St. Padre Pio, pray for us!
