"and they implored Him that they might just touch the hem of His garment; and as many as touched it were cured." ( Matthew 14:36)
When Padre Pio said Mass, many people tried to simply touch him as he passed; some even attempted to tear bits of his vestments or habit. While some may have just been curious or superstitious, most were simply trying to get a hold of Goodness.
In Jesus' time the faithful were cured by simply touching the hem of His cloak - they somehow recognized God in Him whether or not they could verbalize it. People also saw the goodness of God in St. Padre Pio, and reached for him as well.
So what do we reach for now? What did Padre Pio leave us? We can't all possess a relic or an item which he blessed. But for those of us who never knew him, never saw him in this life, we can still reach for that same Goodness. It is faith which causes us to stretch out our hands, faith which the holy friar leaves behind for us. Faith was the answer in Christ's time, in Padre Pio's, and in our own.
"Take heart...your faith has healed you." (Matthew 9:22) May we all hear those words spoken by our Savior.
St. Padre Pio, pray for us!
