“The heart preparing to receive the Eucharist should be like a crystal vase.” (St. Elizabeth Ann Seton)
Elizabeth Seton was not a mystic; she did not see visions or experience ecstasies. Yet she pictured her heart as a crystal vase, open to receiving the Body and Blood of Christ. It’s a beautiful picture, and deserves a moment of our time.
Crystal has two properties which immediately stand out – its many-faceted surface which reflects the light, and its perfect clarity. Both of these were important qualities to St. Elizabeth Ann Seton when it came to receiving the Eucharist. Surely she believed that her heart needed to be perfectly transparent - free from the stain of sin and prepared for the loving and penetrating gaze of her Savior. And surely she hoped that, after receiving Him, she would be a perfect reflection of His light to the world.
We, too, can hope and pray for this. As we go to receive Christ this week, let's start with the Sacrament of Reconciliation and end with a heart aglow for Him.
St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, pray for us!
