Benchmarks to Gauge Your Child's Development

Two of the region’s most recognized authorities on childhood development are being brought together at a free seminar to help parents of young children assess and track their children’s intellectual growth and development. The session, offered on Thursday, November 13th at Holy Family Regional School in Commack will feature Dr. Abigail Jewkes and Dr. Michael Sampson, both of St. John’s University. Attendees will be given tools, and the knowledge to use them at home during at the event.
 
Dr. Abigail Jewkes is an Associate Professor of Early Childhood Education at St. John’s University in New York City. As an author of The Ounce Scale, an observational assessment for infants' and toddlers' growth, accomplishments, areas of difficulty, and temperament, Dr. Jewkes is uniquely qualified to coach parents on developmental stages. In her presentation; ‘Simple Ways to Support Your Child’s Development’, Dr. Jewkes will share her extensive experience training early childhood educators in observation-based assessment.
 
Dr. Michael Sampson is the Dean of the School of Education at St. John’s University and a prolific author. Dr. Sampson is a New York Times best selling co-author of 22 books for young children, including Chicka, Chicka, 1, 2, 3 and The Bill Martin Jr. Big Book of Poetry. Dr. Sampson has written university textbooks, been published in leading peer-reviewed journals, and developed curriculum materials. He currently serves on the editorial board of The Journal of Teacher Education. His books on emergent literacy (The Pursuit of Literacy) and on literacy acquisition (Total Literacy: Reading, Writing, and Learning) make Dr. Sampson the ideal speaker to share his expertise in early literacy with parents.

The session will begin at 7pm and will last approximately 2 hours. It is offered free of charge and is open to all interested parents. The session is being offered as a community service by the Diocese of Rockville Centre’s Education Department and St. John’s University.
