|Farmingdale Pastor Named Monsignor|
ROCKVILLE CENTRE, NEW YORK, June 8, 2007 — Pope Benedict XVI conferred the papal honor of monsignor on Father Michael P. Flynn, pastor of St. Kilian parish, Farmingdale, N.Y.
When the Most Reverend William Murphy, Bishop, Diocese of Rockville Centre, made the announcement, Msgr. Flynn said he was “kind of speechless. I was very grateful that he thought of me. It came as a complete surprise.”
Born in Rockville Centre, N.Y., Msgr. Flynn was raised in Baldwin, N.Y. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education from St. John’s University. He attended then St. John Vianney Seminary, East Aurora, N.Y., from 1967 to 1971.
Msgr. Flynn was ordained into the priesthood May 29, 1971, and assigned to then Nassau County Medical Center, East Meadow, N.Y. for the summer. The following September, he served at Christ the King parish, Commack, N.Y., until 1978, when he was assigned to St. Mark parish, Shoreham, N.Y. He then served at Our Lady of Mercy parish, Hicksville, N.Y. from 1979 to 1986, when he was assigned to St. Margaret of Scotland parish, Selden, N.Y.
In 1992, he served at St. Philip Neri parish, Northport, N.Y., where he stayed until he was appointed pastor at Our Lady of Assumption parish, Copiague, N.Y., in 1993. He has been pastor at St. Kilian parish since 2005.
Msgr. Flynn also completed two sabbatical studies—one in Berkley, Calif., and one in Rome.
He described the latter as “phenomenal.
“You really get to appreciate the universality of the Church and yet its unity, and how everything comes together. It’s just an amazing experience.”
Msgr. Flynn served on the Priests Continuing Education Committee for five years, and he currently serves on the Deacon Admission Advisory Board. In this capacity, he interviews potential candidates for the permanent diaconate.
In his free time, Msgr. Flynn enjoys growing tomatoes and beans in his vegetable garden and listening to Bach, Mozart and Haydn.
