Durhan Studios has been designing and installing stained glass windows since 1902. For over the last fifty years, Paul Coulaz, Master Craftsman and owner of the studio, has been directly supervising the studio’s work. Paul is highly regarded among stained glass professionals for his outstanding ability to select glass colors that coordinate very well with each other in a window, and with the setting in which the window is installed. Paul’s father worked in the Swiss tapestry guild and was himself an expert colorist and dyer of threads for the tapestry medium. Coming to America from Europe he met Paul’s mother who was a weaver of tapestries. Not only did Paul inherit their talent in the arts, but the third generation of the Coulaz family, Michael, has been supervising and crafting windows for 30 years. Michael is also an excellent colorist and selector of glass for optimum texture and shading, as well as being a master craftsman himself. Michael’s son Steven is now working with the Studio. The outstanding skill evident in the quality of work from Durhan Studios is now also in the hands of a fourth Coulaz generation .

Primarily centered in New York, Durhan Studios has designed, executed, and installed stained glass windows from Puerto Rico to Canada. The scope of work created by Durhan Studios encompasses everything from new and originally designed windows to the repair and restoration of existing windows. This may also include the installation of energy efficient frames with expert reinstallation of existing stained glass in a way that is sensitive to the integrity of the original windows. The style of work prepared by Durhan Studios includes traditional and contemporary painted figures, symbols, and geometric or abstract patterns. For over 100 years our windows are seen in churches, synagogues, and commercial and residential architectural settings.

With sensitivity to the history and needs of particular religious traditions, we have familiarity with the symbolic and liturgical customs of a wide variety of religious denominations. Durhan Studios has designed and executed work for Roman Catholic, Byzantine, Orthodox, Protestant, and Evangelical churches, as well as various interdenominational chapels. Our work in synagogues reflects our long experience in symbolic representation faithful to Jewish life and tradition.
