West Islip, NY – Each month, Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center recognizes staff for their dedication and commitment in caring for patients.  Recently, three volunteers were presented with the “Caught You Caring” award for their extraordinary contributions.  Alice and Ken Weckerle and Charles Dudley have collectively donated more than 20,000 hours of service over the past 50 years.

Mr. and Mrs. Weckerle have been a great team over the years, recently working together to sell more than 2,500 raffles for a major fund raiser organized by the Guilds of Good Samaritan.  Alice Weckerle is a charter member of the Guilds, having been involved in this volunteer work since 1958, prior to the hospital’s opening.  Like Ken Weckerle, Charles Dudley became more directly involved at Good Samaritan following retirement.  He is credited with nearly 1,000 service hours providing daily newspapers to patients throughout the hospital over the past 8 years.

“Being part of the volunteer program at Good Sam has been one of the most rewarding experiences in my life.  There is always so much activity, it helps keep me young,” stated Mr. Weckerle, who has also been a volunteer firefighter for more than 60 years.

Volunteers organize community activities, staff the visitors’ gift shop, hold annual fundraising events and operate an offsite thrift shop to support the hospital.  For more information about volunteer opportunities at Good Samaritan, call (631) 376-4444.
