OBITUARY
Reverend Denis J. O’Brien
Former Chaplain Mercy Hospital (now Medical Center)

 
The Reverend Denis J. O’Brien who served as a priest for over 60 years in the Dioceses of Brooklyn and Rockville Centre died November 10 after a long illness. He was 86 years old.

Born in Brooklyn on July 13, 1918 to the late Denis and Eileen O’Driscoll O’Brien, Denis O’Brien earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Saint Francis College and studied for the priesthood at Our Lady of Angels Seminary in Niagara Falls and the Seminary of the Immaculate Conception in Huntington.

He was ordained a priest by Bishop Thomas Molloy on April 11, 1944 at St. James Pro-Cathedral in Brooklyn.

Father O’Brien served his first seven years as a priest as an Associate Pastor at Sacred Heart Church in Brooklyn. In 1951, he was assigned to the Church of St. Martha in Uniondale as an associate pastor. Father O’Brien, who was described in a parish profile as a dedicated priest with the “ability to win reverence, respect and friends” served as a moderator for the Holy Name Society and the Altar Boys’ Society during his 16 years at the parish. He also served as the moderator for the East Nassau Chapter of the Catholic Nurses’ Association.

Father O’Brien was named Pastor of Sacred Heart Church in Cutchogue in 1967 and returned to Nassau County in 1972 to serve as a Chaplain at Mercy Hospital (now Mercy Medical Center). He retired in 1993.

A wake for Father O’Brien was held at the Hartnett Funeral Home in Uniondale on November 13. Father Thomas Mulvanerty presided at Vespers at the funeral home the same evening.

Bishop William Murphy was the principal celebrant at the Funeral Mass on Monday, November 14 at the Church of St. Martha in Uniondale. Monsignor James McDonald was the homilist. Burial is at Holy Cross Cemetery in Brooklyn.

Father O’Brien is survived by two sisters, S. M. Virgilius, RSM and S. M. Kathleen, RSM.
