OBITUARY
Reverend William F. Shean |

Reverend William F. Shean who had been a priest for 31
years died at Christa House in West Babylon on February
17, 2005. He was 64 years old and had been battling
cancer.
William Francis Shean was born in Scranton, Pennsylvania
on
December 23, 1940 to the late William Francis and
Rosemary Kennedy Shean. He attended Scranton Preparatory
School and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from
Scranton University in 1962 and a Master of Arts in
English from Fordham University in 1969. He also
received a Masters of Divinity from Woodstock College.
He was ordained at the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen in
Baltimore, Maryland for the Society of Jesus, Maryland
Province by Lawrence Cardinal Sheehan on
June 9, 1973.
Father Shean served in various ministries in Maryland,
Washington D.C. and Pennsylvania before moving to Long
Island. He served as the Assistant Retreat Director of
St. Ignatius Retreat House in Manhasset from 1983 to
1986.
After leaving the Jesuits for diocesan Priesthood,
Father Shean was assigned in 1996 as an Associate Pastor
at Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church in
Centereach. In 2004 he was transferred to Our Lady of
the Lourdes Parish in West Islip where he also served as
an Associate Pastor.
A wake for Father Shean will be held on Sunday, February
20 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Chapey and Sons
Funeral Home in West Islip.
Father Michael Vetrano will be the principal celebrant
at a Vigil Mass for Father Shean to be celebrated on
Sunday, February 20 at 8:00 p.m. at Our Lady of Lourdes
Church in West Islip. Monsignor Joseph Curley will be
the homilist.
Bishop William Murphy will preside at the Mass of
Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, February 21 at
Our Lady of Lourdes Church. Father Michael Vetrano will
deliver the homily.
Burial will be at St. Catherine Cemetery in Moscow,
Pennsylvania.
Father Shean is survived by his sisters, Kathleen Shean
and Rosemary McGuigan.
