–Father Walter R. Korycki, former chaplain of Kings Park
Psychiatric Center, died on Dec. 20 at the age of 83.
Father Korycki was born in Whitestone, New York on
August 21, 1923 and studied at Brooklyn Cathedral Prep,
Cathedral College, and Immaculate Conception Seminary in
Huntington before being ordained in 1949. From 1949
until 1955, he served at St. Josaphat Church in Bayside.
He was assigned to be chaplain of Kings Park Psychiatric
Center in 1955, at a time when residential chaplains
were first being assigned to the hospital, which at
times served 10,000 patients. Father Korycki remained a
chaplain at Kings Park until his retirement in 1990.
After he retired, Father Korycki took up residence at
St. Philip Neri Church in Northport and continued his
service as a senior priest, assisting in parishes as
needed. His funeral Mass will be celebrated at St.
Philip Neri Church on Dec. 23. Burial followed at Mount
St. Mary Cemetery, Flushing.
