"The secret of happiness is to live moment by moment and to thank God for all that He, in His goodness, sends to us day after day." (St. Gianna Beretta Molla)
We, as humans, are planners. We plan our days with diaries, journals, to-do lists, and calendars. We fill each moment with schedules and appointments. We rarely leave any room for down time, and so we rarely have the opportunity to live as St. Gianna Beretta Molla suggests: moment by moment. Yet to live moment by moment is to live in the presence of God. It is to accept interruptions in our plans, to be able to "go with the flow" of life.
This isn't to say that nothing should be planned - St. Gianna wasn't asking us to live a chaotic free-for-all existence. But she was telling us to be aware of God moment by moment, no matter where our plans take us, because He will come to us in the interruptions, in the overturned schedules, and in the ebb and flow that makes up our lives. Too often we see a change in our plans as upsetting, when perhaps it is God nudging into our day, trying to gently get our attention. If we can accept and be thankful for what He sends us then that is the secret of true happiness.
Today, no matter what you have planned for yourself, be on the lookout for God. Take St. Gianna's advice and live in the moment, keeping your expectations open to whatever God has planned for you!
St. Gianna Beretta Molla, pray for us!
