few brief facts about the Diocese...
(Statistics current as of January 1, 2003)
The diocese was formed in 1957 and covers 1,222 square miles
in Nassau and Suffolk Counties.
The diocese serves approximately 1.5 million Catholics (total
population in both counties is approximately 3 million).
There are 134 parishes in 119 towns.
There are 408 priests, 63 priests from other countries and
240 Permanent Deacons active in the diocese. 4 priests were
ordained in 2002.
There are 89 professed non-priest religious men and 1,333
professed women religious.
There are 19 Seminarians.
There were 21,743 Baptisms, 18,703 Confirmations, 21,905 First
Communions, and 5,375 Marriages last year.
There are 2,622 students in kindergarten, 26,738 in primary
or elementary school, 11,979 in secondary school, and 9,310
in higher institutions.
There are 77 Catholic Elementary Schools, High Schools, and
Colleges/Universities.
Catholic Health Services of Long Island consists of 5 hospitals,
3 nursing homes, 2 home care agencies, 2 senior housing complexes,
a community based home for those with special needs and a
hospice. These facilities served over 743,000people last year.
