Caring for Those Who Cared For Us

The Diocese of Rockville Centre is blessed and privileged to be able to care for its senior priests, men who have dedicated their lives to serving God and Community.  Often devoting more than 60 years to ensuring that Christ could be present daily in all of our lives, our priests have witnessed and celebrated with us life’s great joys and its inevitable sorrows. They have been Christ’s presence during our weddings, and our children’s Baptisms and Confirmations. They have held our hands and prayed with us during our greatest challenges. They have helped us to see God in these moments and have always shared His love with us.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q:   Are the costs associated with caring for our retired priests included in the ministries of the Catholic Ministries Appeal?
A:   No, support for our retired priests is not currently funded by the Appeal.

Q:  Do residents of Pius X contribute to the cost of their stay at Pius X?
A:  Yes, our priests – those living at St. Pius X – provide 15% of the costs, with a Diocesan subsidy of 35% of the St. Pius X operating costs.   Of these funds, none are derived from the Catholic Ministries Appeal.  We are reaching out to friends and parishioners to provide the remaining 50%, or $2.7 million, over the next five years.

Q:  Will any other projects be funded by this campaign?
A:  Any funds raised in excess of the $2.7 million need will be applied to the Priests’ Sickness, Disability and Retirement Fund.

Q:  What will happen after five years?
A:  Since demographic studies indicate that the need for 25 rooms at Dominican Village will likely decrease, the Diocese will be able to renegotiate the number of apartments dedicated to our retired priests.  At that time, we can determine whether additional funds for Pius X are necessary, and/or if our Priests’ Sickness, Disability and Retirement fund is under-funded.
