Diocese of Rockville Centre

ROCKVILLE CENTRE, NEW YORK, July 14, 2005 - Students at St. Raymond’s Catholic School in East Rockaway did the math and it added up to a major donation to a good cause and a personal thank you from Marlo Thomas. The actress met with the schoolchildren on May 3 in New York City to thank them for raising just over $16,000 for St. Jude Hospital through the 26th annual Math-a-Thon fund-raiser. Students obtain sponsors to pay for the number of math problems they complete in special workbooks in the educationally based fund-raising program. The money raised help funds the work of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, founded in 1962 by the late Danny Thomas.

Carol Bernacki, a volunteer coordinator of the Math-a-thon for St. Raymond’s school, expressed her pride in the hard work of the students. “With their help, St. Jude Hospital will be able to create new treatments that may one day lead to a cure for many forms of cancer that will benefit other children everywhere.”
