Diocese of Rockville Centre

ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. – October 21, 2009 – The Diocese of Rockville Centre announced the appointment of Reverend Joseph McCabe, M.M. as the Director of the Propagation of Faith and Mission Office.  The appointment was made by the Most Reverend William Murphy, bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Rockville Centre, and was effective October 18, 2009.

Reverend Joseph McCabe, M.M. The Propagation of Faith and Mission Office seeks to develop an ever-deepening spirit of universal duty of the Catholic Church as well as encourage prayer and financial help for those mission churches.  The Office was organized to develop an awareness of the work of the missionaries and a better understanding of the social, economic, cultural and religious conditions of the people with whom they work; encourage support of the missions andmissionaries through prayer and donations; and develop personal contact with the missionaries.

Fr. McCabe’s experience as both a missioner and as a former official in the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples will give him a special perspective as Director of the Propagation of Faith; especially building on his knowledge of dioceses, bishops and missionary personnel throughout the world.

“Now I can –  in a very concrete way –  repay the priests, Religious, deacons and faithful of Rockville Centre for the many years of generous support they gave to me –  and to so many other sons and daughters of the diocese who serve even now as missionaries ad gentes in Africa, Latin America, Asia and Oceania,” said Fr. McCabe.

“Above all, I am humbled by the great trust which Bishop Murphy has shown in inviting me to assume this position,” he continued.  “It is my prayer that I can be worthy of this trust, helping the Diocese of Rockville Centre in any way possible in furthering its missionary outreach throughout the world.”

Fr. McCabe was raised in the Diocese of Rockville Centre and has done missionary work throughout the world, including Tanzania and Russia.  Also, his decade of service to the Holy See in the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples gives him preeminent knowledge of missionary work.  In 1990, the Vatican bestowed upon him the Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice – given for distinguished service to the church. This year, Father Joe was assigned to Mission Education and Promotion Northeast and Atlantic Region for Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers.  Maryknoll was established in 1911 as the Catholic Foreign Mission Society of America by the Bishops of the United States.  Today, there are over 475 Maryknoll priests and Brothers serving in countries around the world, principally in Africa, Asia and Latin America.

Pauline-Marie Jaricot founded the Society for the Propagation of the Faith (the largest Society of Catholic Missions) in 1822 in Lyon, France.

While growing up, Pauline was well aware of the deprivation and trouble in France and other countries around the world.  She wanted to raise money for the 'missions' in far off places, so every Friday she went down to the factories to collect money from the workers and servants.
