Diocese of Rockville Centre

Bishop Barres to Speak simultaneously on Friday to 28,000 Catholic Elementary and High School students on Holiness and Mission

ROCKVILLE CENTRE, NEW YORK –March 28, 2017 -- At precisely 10:00 a.m. on Friday, March 31, 2017, over 28,000 students enrolled in each of the 47 Catholic elementary schools and 10 Catholic high schools in the Diocese of Rockville Centre will listen to a special message from Bishop John O. Barres, the fifth Bishop of the Diocese of Rockville Centre. Each of the schools will click on a link to the message that was recorded and produced by TelecareTV Studios in Uniondale.

Bishop Barres will speak about “Holiness and Mission” – his motto as bishop. He will speak to the students about his own life journey and how the lessons of teamwork and leadership he experienced as a point guard in basketball has helped him in his vocation as priest, and now bishop of the fifth largest diocese in the United States. Bishop Barres refers to a small two-sided prayer card with the picture of him as bishop on one side and on the flip side of the card a picture of Bishop shooting a layup for the Princeton Tigers JV basketball team. Bishop Barres challenges students to think about “What is on your card?” What is the picture that will define them. As Bishop Barres talks about the card, each of the 28,000 students will simultaneously receive a prayer card.

Two videos were created, one aimed at elementary school students and the second geared to high school students. These videos will also be made available for all to view on DRVC.org and Telecaretv.org.
