“We must pray without ceasing, in every occurrence and employment of our lives – that prayer which is rather a habit of lifting up the heart to God as in a constant communication with Him.” (St. Elizabeth Ann Seton)

Prayer can take many forms: prayers which we've known since childhood, meditation, community prayer, the Divine Office, chant or song, the Mass – all of these are ways to direct our thoughts towards God.  But here Mother Seton advises that we turn to God constantly throughout our day, offering Him the bits and pieces of our lives as they occur, asking for Christ’s guidance and blessing.  A small poem from years ago still has validity:

“Lord, make my life a constant prayer, unfaltering, never ceasing;
Lifted up beyond this world to that which You find pleasing.
May Your peace embrace my every thought,
Let nothing go astray;
That I may raise my heart aloft
And serve You on my way…”  (Author unknown)

As we embark on a year so full of the unknown, perhaps we can make it a habit to lift our eyes and hearts throughout the day, seeking what is above and keeping in constant communion with our Heavenly Father.

St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, pray for us!
