RE: Announcement regarding Sister Joanne Callahan, O.S.U.

FROM: Office of Communications

Sister Joanne Callahan, O.S.U., the Bishop’s Secretary for Education in the Diocese of Rockville Centre, has asked us to release the following announcement on her behalf:

“After forty-seven years in the field of Catholic education, and after thirty-one years serving the Diocese of Rockville Centre, I have decided to retire on December 31, 2019. I intend to continue to work with my sisters and serve my community as Province Leader for the Ursuline Sisters of Tildonk. I am grateful to God for the many blessings He has given me in my vocation and in my work in Catholic education, and I am especially grateful to the many wonderful people, religious and lay, who have accompanied me in this important mission over the years.”

Bishop Barres stated: “Sister Joanne Callahan has been a servant leader in Catholic education in the Diocese of Rockville Centre over many years.  Her dedication to Catholic formation, academic excellence and all the dimensions of advancing the evangelizing mission of Catholic education on Long Island have been exemplary.   She is a great example of the “feminine genius” of so many women religious who lead the Church with the charism of their communities and the prophetic nature of their witness.  I thank Sister Joanne for her many contributions to Catholic education and mission, her support of the Catholic Faith Network as well as her service to the common good of all Long Island.”
