Bishop Barres to Offer Meditation Tonight at Opening Prayer Service for 72nd Session of the United Nations General Assembly 11 September 2017

ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. – September 8, 2017–The Most Reverend John O. Barres, Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Rockville Centre (@BishopBarres) (, will offer the Keynote Meditation during the Prayer Service organized by the Permanent Observer Mission of the Holy See to the United Nations on the occasion of the opening of the 72nd session of the United Nations General Assembly.

The Prayer Service will take place on September 11, 2017, at 6:00 PM at the Church of the Holy Family, the United Nations parish (315 East 47th Street, New York, NY 10016). The Prayer Service normally lasts from 6:00 to 6:50 PM.

The theme of the 72nd General Debate is “Focusing on People: Striving for peace and a decent life for all on a sustainable planet.”

Bishop Barres in his six minute meditation invites attendees to remember the souls of those killed on September 11, 2001. “…we draw inspiration from these souls and from the sacrifices that we witnessed on 9/11,” said Bishop Barres.

Bishop Barres will talk about the ongoing witness of the 9/11 heroes. “Each one of us here, the tens of thousands associated in the mission of peace of the United Nations, all those involved in ‘Focusing on People and Striving for a decent life for all on a sustainable planet,’ find in the 9/11 heroes’ ongoing witness a calling to expand our souls and our global vision of peace and justice in the world and to commit ourselves anew to the sacrifices necessary to make that vision a reality.”
