OVER 90 YOUNG ADULTS ATTENDING SECOND ANNUAL CAMP QUO VADIS

  • Held July 8-13 at the Seminary of the Immaculate Conception

ROCKVILLE CENTRE, NEW YORK – July 9, 2018 – The Diocese of Rockville Centre Office of Vocations is conducting its second annual summer camp for Catholic young men and women, Camp Quo Vadis, from Sunday, July 8th, to Friday, July 13th, at the Seminary of the Immaculate Conception, Huntington.  Camp Quo Vadis, Latin for “Where are you going?” will host 46 young men and 46 young women from across Long Island, ranging from 13 to 18 years-of-age.  Of these 92 campers, 63 are new to Quo Vadis and 29 are returning from last year.  The students come from parishes across the Diocese of Rockville Centre, with the most coming from the Church of Our Lady of Victory in Floral Park (10 campers), the Church of Saint Martha in Uniondale (8 campers), and the Church of Saint Anne in Brentwood (7 campers).  This sleep-away camp will help these students listen to God’s voice, answer questions about future vocations, and prepare them for leadership.

The camp began the evening of Sunday, July 8th, with all the campers gathering together for the opening Mass.  Starting Monday morning and ending with Friday morning’s send-off mass, students will engage in various activities designed to enrich their faith, engender friendship, and encourage fun.  The campers will encounter the living God in Eucharistic adoration and daily mass.  They will also experience God’s abounding love and mercy in the sacrament of confession.  Dynamic speakers will witness to the work of God in their own lives and what God will do through the lives of the students.

Opportunities for small group discussion and private prayer will be provided to lead students to encounter the face of God in one another.  Games will help the campers enjoy each other’s company, cultivate deeper relationships, and live out the joy of the Gospel.  Soccer, hikes, ultimate Frisbee, can-jam, and the Messy Olympics are just some of the ways the Quo Vadis team will bring the campers together in lasting friendship.

“Camp Quo Vadis is one of the many ways we the faithful of the Diocese of Rockville Centre are responding to Bishop Barres' call for Dramatic Missionary Growth on Long Island,” said Father Christopher Sullivan, Associate Pastor of the Church of Our Lady of Victory in Floral Park and the leader of Camp Quo Vadis.  Father Sullivan continued, “Camp Quo Vadis seeks to empower the youth of Long Island to encounter Jesus Christ in His Church and Sacraments in the context of a summer camp, so that they can hear Him ask, ‘Quo Vadis?’ Where are you going?  Bishop Barres' episcopal motto is Holiness and Mission.  The young men and women attending Camp Quo Vadis will grow in those two areas – holiness through relationship with Jesus Christ, and mission – by hearing His calling to go out to the world.”
“Last year, I attended Quo Vadis to deepen my faith life and spend some time away from the hustle and bustle of the world,” said Joseph Krug, a returning camper and a parishioner of the Church of Saint Hedwig in Floral Park.  “This year, I’m going to Quo Vadis to make new friends, to see old ones, to pray with and in the Church, and enjoy a week of Faith, Friendship, and Fun.”
