Do you believe in coincidence? Mother Teresa didn’t. She saw God’s concern for us in every detail of life: “…if we could see His goodness everywhere, His concern for us, His awareness of our needs – the phone call we’ve waited for, the ride we are offered, the letter in the mail, just the little things He does for us throughout the day. As we remember and notice His love for us, we just begin to fall in love with Him because He is so busy with us – you can’t resist Him. I believe there’s no such thing as luck in life, it’s God’s love, it’s His.”
Our faith teaches us that God truly is aware of even the smallest circumstances of our lives. Jesus asks us: “Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from the will of your Father. And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So don't be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.” (Matthew 10:20-31). And so it naturally follows that God is active in the minutiae of our day as well. That is just one of the miracles of Christianity – that an all-powerful, almighty God should stoop to care for His creatures.
Surely this is the work of the Holy Spirit, the Comforter, whom God sends forth to guide us. Those little promptings in our heart, the consolation in the words of a friend or in something we’ve read that day – all these things the Spirit gives us to remind us that we are not alone. Today, ask in prayer to recognize the solace of the Comforter in your life. Is it luck? Or Love? You decide…
Bl. Mother Teresa, pray for us!
