“Who God is in His Essence, no one will fathom, neither the mind of Angels nor of man...Get to know God by contemplating His attributes.” Christ to St. Faustina
God’s attributes are many: He is holy, all-knowing, all-wise, faithful, loving, omnipotent, just and merciful, to name a few. One of the best ways to contemplate the attributes of God is to read scripture, especially the life of Christ. Here these attributes come alive in the person of our Lord and Savior, and we can learn so much by studying Him: “The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth…No one has ever seen God, but God the One and Only, who is at the Father's side, has made him known.” (John 1:14, 18)
We call it a mystery, and surely the nature of the Trinity is incomprehensible. One God in community: Father and Son united by the Love of the Holy Spirit. By reading the life of Christ we learn of God’s goodness; we see how He reacted to the poor, the marginalized, those who society had no time for. Today it is no different, and God has not changed. He aches for the victims of child abuse, gang wars, terrorism and natural disasters. God calls on us to be His grace and truth on this earth, to be faithful in small things, to use our own hurt to heal others. It is something every human being is capable of – we don’t need a degree, or wealth, or social status – we just need to have an open heart.
Read the stories of Jesus – the ones you remember from your childhood, the ones you aren’t familiar with. Let them bring alive in your life the truth of your God. Learn from His attribtues, and follow Him. Amen!
