“Anyone who welcomes you welcomes me, and anyone who welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me.” (Matthew 10:41)
To welcome someone means to receive them with pleasure and hospitality into one's company or home. Fr. Solanus Casey did this for most of his life as a Capuchin priest. There is a gift to being a welcoming person, someone who treats each visitor as a cherished guest. From the stories that are told about Fr. Solanus there is no doubt that he had that gift: he took his time with each person, careful not to rush them, listening to their stories, praying with them.
Christ tells us that when we welcome others, we welcome Him and the Father who sent Him. The divine love with which we receive others is surely the Holy Spirit. And when we receive people in this manner, in divine love, we give of ourselves as well.
Today, pray for a welcoming heart, an open mind and a receiving spirit. Ask Fr. Solanus to share his gift of hospitality with you, for the sake of Christ the Lord.
Ven. Solanus Casey, pray for us!
