"Scarcely the expanded heart receives its longing desire, when, rapt in His love, covered with His righteousness, we are no longer the same. We are transformed by adoration, thanksgiving, love, joy, peace, contentment." (St. Elizabeth Ann Seton)
Though we may think of our body parts as finite, the heart is perhaps an exception, for it is infinite in its ability to love and be loved. As such, it is expandable, and when its ultimate desire is Christ, as Mother Seton tells us, we are changed - conforming to the will of God for our lives.
When King Solomon built his temple and dedicated it to God, he prayed, "But will God indeed dwell on the earth? Even heaven and the highest heaven cannot contain You, much less this house that I have built!" (1 Kings 8:27) Though Solomon's temple and the highest heaven cannot contain God, our hearts can! The heart, enlarged by love, can become a dwelling place for the King of Kings and Lord of Lords - what an incredible thought!
Today, let us expand our hearts - by loving those God puts in our path, offering aid to someone in need, forgiving a friend, making a sacrifice. This is the expansion which lets Christ in, which allows the Holy Spirit to create an eternal home for our Father within us.
St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, pray for us!
