It was said that when St. Anthony died, all the bells in the surrounding churches were rung by angels. What, and who, really are angels? Scripture speaks of them as messengers from God, beings created to assist us in our time on earth. We each have a guardian angel who is constantly in the presence of God, as Jesus described in Matthew 18:10: "See that you do not look down on one of these little ones. For I tell you that their angels in heaven always look upon the face of my Father in heaven." Imagine, a being created for you, to help guide your soul to Heaven! Someone who kneels for you in God’s presence and sees the wonders of His glory!

Some may think of angels as fictional beings, but they are very real, and we should be aware of their ability to assist us. How often do we speak with our guardian angels during the day? How often do we ask their help, especially in doing what is pleasing to God? Let us get more accustomed to being conscious of God’s angels; they are here to serve us and lead us on the path to Him.

"Praise the LORD, you his angels,
you mighty ones who do his bidding,
       who obey his word.

Praise the LORD, all his heavenly hosts,
you his servants who do his will

Psalm 103:20-21

St. Anthony, pray for us!
