|Bishop Murphy to Speak on Inter-religious Dialogue at Local Synagogue|
ROCKVILLE CENTRE, NEW YORK, October 2, 2007 — The Most Reverend William Murphy, bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Rockville Centre, will lead an evening of learning and dialogue about Christian-Jewish relations at Congregation Beth El, Massapequa on October 8, 2007 at 8:00 p.m.
Dignitaries from the Jewish community, Catholic Church and other faiths will be present for what promises to be an evening of intellectual stimulation and mutual understanding.
This program is sponsored by the Conference of Jewish Organizations of Nassau County, the Holocaust and Tolerance Center of Nassau County, the Long Island Board of Rabbis, the Long Island Chapter of the American Jewish Committee, Molloy College Christian-Jewish Dialogue Institute, and the Rabbinical Assembly of Nassau County.
Bishop Murphy was recently appointed a member of the Pontifical Council for Inter-religious Dialogue. He also currently serves as chair of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishop’s (USCCB) Subcommittee on Inter-religious Dialogue.
Pope John Paul II appointed Bishop Murphy to succeed the late Bishop James T. McHugh to head the Diocese of Rockville Centre on June 26, 2001. He was installed as the Fourth Bishop of Rockville Centre on September 5, 2001.
Bishop Murphy has served several times as a member of a Holy See Delegation for United Nations conferences, and as a member of the 3rd United Nations Special Session on Disarmament in 1988. He has been a member of three Presidential Delegations to Haiti (1987, 1990 and 1991), and was appointed to the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom by President George W. Bush in 2001. His service to the USCCB included a position on the Board of Directors, as well as a member of Committees on International Justice and Peace, Latin America, an Ad Hoc Committee on Health Care Issues as well as an adjunct to the Committee on the Catechism of the Catholic Church. Most recently, Bishop Murphy served on the USCCB Committee on Migration.
