Religious Jubilee Mass Homily

October 7, 2018

Today we celebrate the Religious Jubilee Anniversaries of our dedicated women and men religious who are with us here today. The total number of years in religious life of our Jubilarians this year is 5,664.
Their prophetic living of their vows, their commitment to a life of prayer and contemplation, their bold spirit of evangelization, their living of the charism of their founders and particular religious community, their fidelity to the Gospel and the Church’s teaching, their incredible leadership in the spiritual and corporal works of mercy has been, over decades, and remains, a constant inspiration to all of us.
With the readings on marriage from the Book of Genesis and the Gospel of Mark, we give particular thanks to our women and men religious today for the way they have supported marriages and families whether it has been through their friendships with a wide variety of families, Catholic education, our Catholic hospitals on Long Island, our lived Catholic Social Justice teaching expressed in immigration services on Long Island and so many other expressions of their charisms.
The heroic and courageous spirit of our Jubilarian religious is honored this year in communion with the Canonization of Blessed Archbishop Oscar Romero with a donation to “Centro Corazon de Maria”, founded by the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary to minister to the Hispanic Community of Eastern Long Island through education and various social services to those in need.
So as we honor our Jubilarians today, we also invoke the courageous spirit of Archbishop Romero, a courageous spirit that our religious have lived for so many decades and in so many apostolic contexts.
