For Gastrointestinal Endoscopy For Promoting Excellence in Endoscopy

Smithtown, NY — St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center earned the recognition of The American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE) for promoting quality in endoscopy, making it the only community hospital on Long Island to do so. As 1 of 35 newly recognized endoscopy units and 1 of only 307 units recognized in the entire country, St. Catherine's Endoscopy Unit has distinguished itself as an organization that, in the words of  Bret T. Petersen, MD, Chairman of ASGE’s Quality Assurance in Endoscopy Committee, provides "high quality care to their patients in a safe environment." Dr. Petersen added, “We are proud to acknowledge these ASGE members through our Endoscopy Unit Recognition Program for their commitment to promoting the highest standards of safety and quality.”

Gastrointestinal endoscopy includes procedures, such as colonoscopy, used to diagnose and treat a variety of conditions with specialized endoscopic equipment. St. Catherine's Executive Vice President and  Chief Administrative Officer Dennis Verzi, said, "We are very pleased to see that the dedicated staff at St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center, and particularly in our Endoscopy Unit, are being recognized for the top quality work they provide daily. Community members can take comfort in knowing that the best health care is right next door and that we continually strive to maintain the highest quality and obtain the best outcomes for our patients."

For more than 10 years, St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center has been a trusted health care resource. St. Catherine’s is located on 110 acres on the north shore of Long Island in Smithtown. The campus is comprised of a 558-bed, not-for-profit hospital (including 240 nursing home beds), a 298-unit senior housing facility and a medical office building.

St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center is a member of Catholic Health Services.

St. Catherine of Siena provides approximately $10 million in community outreach and charity care each year. The Medical Center’s community activities include a variety of lectures, screenings, health fairs, blood drives and other programs.
