Smithtown, NY- St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center earned the American College of Radiology’s (ACR) gold standard of quality certification in magnetic resonance imaging of the breast, making it the first Long Island hospital to do so. The certification is achieved through a rigorous evaluation conducted by board certified physicians and medical physicists of staff and equipment.

The accredited breast MRI diagnostics are part of St. Catherine of Siena’s new Women’s Health and Outpatient Diagnostic Pavilion on the medical center’s Smithtown campus. The pavilion offers women a variety of advanced diagnostic and surgical techniques, such as breast MRI and breast MRI biopsy, breast ultrasound, fine needle aspiration, digital mammography, needle localization, stereotactic core breast biopsy, sentinel lymph node biopsy, ultrasound-guided cyst aspiration and ultrasound-guided needle biopsy, all in one convenient location with a free, dedicated parking lot and a private entrance.

Director of Breast Imaging Anne Green, MD explained, “Early detection of breast cancer leads to early treatment and improved survival. MRI is a powerful tool that the radiologist can use in the fight against breast cancer. It is not intended to replace mammography or ultrasound, but to be used as an adjunctive tool.”

In order to remain a top health care facility in New York, St. Catherine of Siena stays at the forefront of new technology. “MRI of the breast has rapidly evolved,” said Dr. Green. “The ACR has acknowledged its key role and provided guidelines and indications for appropriate use and now offers ACR accreditation for breast MRI. ACR accreditation is important, because it sets quality standards for breast MRI by evaluating the qualifications of personnel, equipment performance, quality control and image resolution.”

Other accreditations which St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center holds from the American College of Radiology include magnetic resonance imaging, breast ultrasound, vascular ultrasound, obstetrical ultrasound, computed tomography, nuclear medicine, planar imaging and nuclear cardiology.
St. Catherine of Siena has also been designated an ACR Breast Imaging Center of Excellence.
