Rockville Centre, NY – In a joint venture of Catholic Health Services (CHS) and the Adelphi University Robert B. Willumstad School of Business, a master of business administration (MBA) degree was recently awarded to 16 members of the first graduating class of physicians.  All graduates are affiliated with a CHS facility.
“Effective and informed leadership is extremely important in navigating today’s health care environment,” explained Jack Soterakis, MD, senior vice president for medical affairs and medical director at St. Francis Hospital, a member of CHS.  “In order for physicians to successfully meet the challenges ahead, greater proficiency in nonclinical areas is necessary.”

The program was formed approximately three and a half years ago on the recommendation of Dr. Soterakis.  Participants met one evening per week at CHS’s Melville offices for three years, except during the summer.  Classes were taught by Adelphi faculty and guest lecturers, for a total of 42 credits, with coursework covering “Leadership and Innovation in Complex Systems”, “Corporate Finance”, “Persuasive Communications and Negotiations” and other areas.

“Many thanks to my colleague, Dr. Jack Soterakis, for spearheading this collaboration with Adelphi University, which has just graduated its first cohort of physician business executives, of which I am proud to call myself a member,” commented Patrick O’Shaughnessy, DO, FACEP, MBA, senior vice president of medical affairs and chief medical officer for CHS’s St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center.

The second cohort in the CHS/Adelphi MBA program for physicians will graduate in May of 2014, and a third will begin studies in September of this year.  In a similar collaboration, the initial cohort of CHS non-physician employees graduated with an MBA specializing in health services administration from Adelphi in 2012.
