Chrism Mass 2024

The Annual Chrism Mass took place on Tuesday, March 26, 2024, at the Cathedral of Saint Agnes.  During the Mass, the Most Reverend John O. Barres, Bishop of Rockville Centre consecrated the Oil of Chrism and blessed the Oil of Catechumens and the Oil of the Sick.  These holy oils will be used throughout the Diocese during the coming year in celebration of the sacraments.  Priests of the Diocese also renewed the promises they made on the day of their ordination.

This year, a pontifical blessing with a plenary indulgence attached was imparted at the celebration of the Chrism Mass.  The following conditions must be fulfilled in order to obtain the plenary indulgence:

  1. Detachment from all sin, even venial.
  2. Confession of sins in the sacrament of Penance.
  3. Reception of Holy Communion.
  4. Prayer for the intentions of the Supreme Pontiff.

HOLY THURSDAY, MARCH 28, 2024
HOLY THURSDAY MORNING PRAYER – March 28 2024 – 9 a.m.

HOLY THURSDAY PONTIFICAL MASS OF THE LORD’S SUPPER – March 28, 2024 – 8 p.m.
St. Agnes Cathedral, 29 Quealy Place, Rockville Centre, NY 11570

Bishop John Barres is the main celebrant.  This Mass commemorates the Last Supper, during which Christ instituted the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist, the Sacrament of Holy Orders and gave us His commandment to love one another.  During the Mass the bishop will perform the Mandatum, the washing of the feet of 12 parishioners of the Cathedral parish.  At the end of Mass of the Lord’s Supper, the Eucharist is brought, in procession, to an Altar of Repose in the Cathedral.  The Cathedral is then open until Midnight for worshipers to spend time in adoration. The Very Rev. Michael Duffy, Rector of the Cathedral of St. Agnes is the Homilist.

GOOD FRIDAY, MARCH 29, 2024

GOOD FRIDAY SERVICE.  PASSION OF OUR LORD.  March 29, 2024 – 3 p.m.

Mass is not celebrated on Good Friday.  Bishop John Barres will preside at a celebration of the Lord’s Passion. During this celebration, Christ’s crucifixion is remembered through the Liturgy of the Word that includes Veneration of the Cross and Holy Communion.  During the 3 p.m. service, worshippers will silently adore the cross that has been placed at the steps of the sanctuary. Holy Communion will be distributed during this liturgy. The Very Rev. Eric Fasano, Vicar General of the Diocese is the Homilist.

HOLY SATURDAY, MARCH 30, 2024
HOLY SATURDAY PONTIFICAL EASTER VIGIL MASS– March 30, 2024 – 8 p.m.

Bishop John Barres is the celebrant and homilist at the Easter Vigil Mass celebrating the Resurrection of Christ.  The Vigil begins in total darkness with the lighting of the Easter candle.  There are four parts: Light Service (Blessing of the Fire and lighting of the Paschal Candle), Liturgy of the Word, Liturgy of Baptism and the Eucharist.  After a reflective and intense period of prayer during Lent, Catechumens (those who have not been baptized) will become full members of the Catholic Church at St. Agnes Cathedral and in parishes throughout the Diocese of Rockville Centre. Catechumens, those who have never been baptized will receive baptism, confirmation and First Communion at the Holy Saturday Easter Vigil.

Bishop John Barres is the celebrant and homilist at the Mass of the Resurrection of the Lord.  Other Masses at the Cathedral on Easter Sunday:

In Parish Center: 9:30 a.m., 11:00 a.m., 12:30 p.m.
